Santa Giustina, the bell of the paper installed for a week is on fire

The flames noticed just before 8, the firefighters and carabinieri intervened. Mayor Minella: “I hope it was an accident but I will file a complaint”

SANTA GIUSTINA. The bell for the separate collection of paper destroyed by fire on the first morning of yesterday in the ecological island of via Cal de Formiga, in the square next to the middle school, was brand new.

The alarm to the Belluno firefighters was launched just before 8: smoke and flames rose from one of the two paper bins installed in the square across the street from the SuperW supermarket.

When the firefighters arrived on the scene, the flames had already destroyed the new generation dumpster owned by Bellunum.

The firefighters, with water lances, got over the fire within a few minutes, then carefully wetting the material left on the bottom of the container to prevent the flames from re-igniting. On the other hand, the other bin for paper and the one for glass, positioned in contact with the burnt one, did not report any damage.

On the spot, together with the firefighters, the carabinieri of the Santa Giustina station intervened for the first checks. There are no certainties, for the moment, about the causes of the fire that destroyed the dumpster: the fire could have been triggered by someone who accidentally threw residues from the stove with embers still burning. Even if it suggests the temporal proximity with the arsonist raid on Friday evening in Feltre, with three paper bins, also owned by Bellunum, set on fire in rapid succession and two others damaged more slightly by the vandals who tried to set them on fire.

This morning, anyway, the mayor Ivan Minella, who carried out an inspection to verify the incident, will file a complaint with the carabinieri. The area between the swimming pool park and the middle school is under video surveillance and therefore useful information could come from the recordings of the cameras.

The city administration will also inform Bellunum of the destruction of the brand new bell. The replacement of the containers for differentiated waste, with the implementation of the new generation ones for automated collection, had in fact just been completed.

“Bellunum finished replacing the containers with new ones a week ago that allow mechanized unloading with the equipped truck,” explains Mayor Minella. “I will go and report the damage to the carabinieri, although I hope it was not a voluntary gesture but an accident. Maybe a person who, as has happened in the past, inadvertently threw lighted embers. But it is disheartening that these things happen as soon as something is done to make public spaces more decorous, because now that spring is approaching we have started to put our hands on ecological islands, cleaning and arranging them ».
