Saudi Arabia could recognize Israel as a country if a global agreement is reached on the creation of a state for the Palestinians, the Arab kingdom’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, said on Tuesday.
When asked at a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos whether Riyadh would recognize the State of Israel in such a case, as part of a broader political agreement, the Saudi foreign minister replied “of course.” “We agree that regional peace includes peace for Israel, but this could only be through peace for the Palestinians, through a Palestinian state,” he said.
Prince Faisal said ensuring peace in the region through the creation of a Palestinian state is an issue they have been working on with the US government, “and is most relevant in the context of Gaza.”
“There is a path to a much better future for the region, for the Palestinians and for Israel, which is peace, and we are fully committed to it,” he declared, estimating that “a ceasefire by all parties must be a point.” starting point for a permanent sustainable peace, which can only occur through justice for the Palestinian people.
Israel already has diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco, and normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia would strengthen its position in the region.
Following the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, Riyadh froze US-backed talks to improve relations with Israel, according to two Reuters sources. With RT
