The road between the Brugse Steenweg (N9) and the Lovaart, between Ghent and Lievegem, is currently closed to all traffic. Several high-voltage cables ended up on the road and in the water after a ship with a crane hit them. The ship is moored and the crane is overturned on the pontoon.

The Center Fire Department is currently on site and is assessing the situation. “It could take a while,” says fire brigade spokeswoman Anouk Veyt. “We must first determine what needs to be done with the high-voltage cables and then ensure that the road is free again as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we ask that you avoid the area.”

The police are also on site to direct traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians can still pass until 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM, the municipality of Lievegem said. Afterwards, grid operator Elia starts work on the cables and no one can continue. It is not yet clear how long these works will take.
