In Lodelinsart, a sub-municipality of Charleroi, a search took place on Monday morning at the home of a suspect in an investigation into the trafficking of drugs, weapons and vehicles. He opened fire on the members of the special units from behind a door.

A 36-year-old police officer was killed, a colleague was seriously injured and is still in hospital, and a third member of the special forces was slightly injured and has already been able to leave the hospital. The perpetrator did not survive the shooting.

The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office announced new information from the investigation on Thursday. “It appears that the suspect hit the officers five times,” said prosecutor Vincent Fiasse. “They were hit in the legs, collarbones and armpits, parts of the body not protected by bulletproof vests.”
