SMAR is technological innovation to increase the yield and profitability of corn cultivation

The Government of El Salvador innovates in its agricultural services to increase the yield and profitability of production, with the launch of the High Yield Corn Sowing (SMAR) program.

The benefit, which will be available through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock under the advice of the High Performance in Agriculture company (ATIDER), makes agricultural mechanization services immediately available to producers, so that they can provide initiation of a new production model and methodology.

There are more than 120 pieces of machinery that farmers will be able to access, including tractors, harrows, silage machines, cultivators/fertilizers, four- and six-row seeders, wagons and drones.

The program has the advice of one of the most influential agricultural specialists in the world, the Mexican Ernesto Cruz González, who has more than four decades of experience. He has transferred his knowledge to SMAR technicians in integrated crop management, which includes plant nutrition, soil fertility, the use of technology and profitability management.

«It is a fact that food production must increase and in the case of corn it must double and we must do this in the face of climate change and other factors. In both El Salvador and Mexico the challenge is great because we must produce high-performance and profitable food. Let it be the basis of economic development. President Nayib Bukele’s vision is to implement first-class agriculture and we are going to achieve it together,” said the agronomist.

And he added: “SMAR was born at the initiative of President Nayib Bukele and has several very clear lines of action, first we have to produce high quality food for the population at a very affordable price, second we have to modernize agriculture with technology, third we have to do possible for all farmers to have access to credit. And fourth, we have to create the necessary infrastructure so that farmers have the certainty of all services, financial, technical assistance, mechanization, collection and marketing, developing schemes of what we call contract farming, to link all the links of the economic chain.

The Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Óscar Domíngue, explained that for more than a year various actions have been developed to verify the results of innovation, implementation of technologies and the use of specialized agricultural machinery.

“With the experience of Ernesto Cruz and ATIDER, our technical teams now have the expertise to serve interested farmers, who will increase production, increase the profitability of their crops and contribute to food security for all Salvadoran families.”

Thus, SMAR’s more than 200 trained technicians will provide advice to Salvadoran producers so that they can increase their profits with the same investment as the traditional model.

This program is viewed in a comprehensive manner because in addition to providing mechanization and technical assistance, it implements respect for the environment and provides credit opportunities, hence the Agricultural Development Bank (BFA) has generated a special financing line for SMAR.

Producers who have already acquired SMAR services highlight the benefits of the initiative. «With this we have two harvests with the program, it is very good, because they have helped us a lot with the technology they are providing, the contribution that exists through machinery, supervision and assistance for cultivation. There are already two corn harvests that we have carried out and now we are going to start with another project, which is corn,” said producer David Castellón.

Likewise, he highlighted that the yield and quality of his crops has improved, since before he produced 70 nets of corn and now thanks to the assistance and technology provided he has improved the size of the product. “Today we have managed to produce 84 nets of corn and it is of better quality because we have reduced the amount of small corn,” explained the farmer.
