Spain is waiting with uncertainty and tension for a decision from Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez: Will the socialist quit prematurely after six years as head of government?

The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wants to announce today whether he will resign from office following a corruption complaint against his wife. This was announced by the left-wing government in Madrid. The socialist politician surprisingly announced last Wednesday that he was considering resigning. He canceled all public appointments for a five-day reflection period and announced a decision for today.

The 52-year-old, who has ruled the fourth-largest EU economy for almost six years, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday that he wanted to think about whether it was still “worth it, despite the swamp in which the right and right-wing extremists try to do politics. Whether I should continue to lead the government or step down from this high honor.

Over the weekend, thousands took to the streets in Madrid and other cities across the country to demonstrate for Sánchez to remain in office. The demonstrators carried placards with slogans such as “Sánchez, yes, keep going” and “Don’t give up.”

The complaint against the head of government’s wife was filed by the organization “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands), which is classified as very right-wing. She accuses Begoña Gómez (49), who does not hold public office, of influence and corruption in the economy. “Manos Limpias” later admitted that the ad was based on media reports that could well be false.
