The cities of Colombia: a public good

Cities with their streets, squares, green areas and other public spaces are the property of their inhabitants. These territories bring together thousands of people with diverse uses and habits. Therefore, it is a priority to build a balance to ensure that each of us experiences the appropriate individual and collective environment in the city where we spend our lives, with full access to the benefits of urban life.

Understanding that the city is a common good allows us to focus efforts on working towards sustainable urban planning and a better quality of life for its inhabitants. This is a challenge that requires interaction between local governments and civil society to preserve, promote and share urban planning with a closer and citizen-centered use.

It is necessary to create sustainable models of human development in the cities of Colombia, based on culture and citizen responsibility, by ingraining in each of us the value of the public within the notion of city construction; despite the difficulties that our departmental capitals and large municipalities are going through, especially in matters related to education and coexistence, and other social evolution programs.

Therefore, proposing changes in the behavior of city inhabitants to promote civic culture must involve understanding and transforming the political, social and cultural customs that reproduce the decomposition of society in order to deconstruct within urban communities, and establish a series of optimal customs that generate a sense of belonging and facilitate the coexistence of citizens.

Changes that will be achieved if our local leaders propose a “cultural architecture”, understood as a strategic innovation to obtain an improvement in social behaviors, by employing high-impact and long-term pedagogical actions, obviously, this is a task that It involves years and it is even necessary for entire generations to pass to create a new vision of society, but it is time to begin these adjustment processes and move forward to banish destructive behaviors from healthy coexistence.
