Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the result of a mutation in the DMD gene, which encodes the protein dystrophin, essential for maintaining the integrity of muscle fibers. The absence or decrease of this protein leads to the degeneration and progressive destruction of the muscles, which causes motor difficulties, respiratory and cardiac weakness, among other symptoms.
Symptoms usually appear in early childhoodusually between 3 and 5 years of age. Children affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy may experience difficulty walking, muscle weakness in the legs and pelvis, abnormal gait, loss of motor skills, weakness in respiratory muscles, and cardiomyopathy, among other symptoms.
