From a gynecological point of view, there is nothing wrong with pharmacies supplying the mini-pill for contraception to young women without an initial prescription from a gynecologist. “In most cases, a gynecological examination is not necessary for contraceptive advice anyway, least of all when desogestrel is prescribed.” Many women, especially younger women, shy away from vaginal examinations. Therefore, low-threshold access without a doctor’s visit with confidential advice in the pharmacy could lower the threshold for obtaining an effective contraceptive.
