The old service station transformed into a bistro: Fucine will give new life to the work of the architect D’Olivo

The renovation of the service station located on regional road 56, right in front of the Danieli factory in Buttrio, coincides with the centenary of the birth of the architect Marcello D’Olivo. The bistro, which will be called “Fucine”, will most likely open its doors on Monday 3 May: in the first phase, six employees will be employed to guarantee the service. The recovery of the old service station, closed for several years, is the first step in the village recovery project, which will soon be completed with the opening of the nearby hotel, which is also the subject of a massive renovation.

The design of the old petrol pump was commissioned to the famous architect by Officine Danieli and built in 1962. D’Olivo’s projects move in time and space, from the Villaggio del Fanciullo in Lignano to the monument to the unknown soldier in Baghdad, in a continuous research based on the relationships between architecture, geometry and nature.

The service station can be considered a “small” synthesis of D’Olivo’s language, yet the severe conditions of decay and the state of neglect, however, required a considerable design effort in respect of the architecture characterized by the ten columns supporting the shelter arched designed in order to obtain an acrobatic overhang of about eleven meters towards the National road. To this end, in order to ensure anti-seismic safety and in the firm desire to avoid invasive superstructures such as tie rods and metal braces, the columns were reinforced thanks to the use of cylindrical steel formworks which allowed the structural jacket to be “injected” from below. The columns and the reinforced concrete roofing “sail”, of which the imprint of the original formwork remains, is freed, the full-height windows overlooking the regional road, allow you to appreciate the essence of the structure and the original sign of Marcello D’Olivo.

The same internal partitions, necessary for the re-functionalization of the organism, do not permanently damage the architectural framework. The lighting project follows the tectonic principles in order to allow the correct reading of the volumes during the seasons and the different lighting conditions. The designed outdoor spaces follow and accompany the “lantern” which is rekindled after years, generating new places for meeting and socializing.

The Fucine café and bistro will guarantee proximity cuisine, quality of ingredients and service: it will be open from 5.30 to 21, covering the main phases of the day: from breakfasts to mid-morning coffees, from quick lunches to afternoon snacks up to the evening aperitif. .

The result of careful research by chef Andrea Fantini on raw materials and above all on the naturalness and harmony of the combinations, the menu will combine the succession of the seasons with the variety of territories, the freshness and genuineness of the ingredients. “By personally visiting the companies producing dairy products, natural drinks, cured meats and the coffee artisans, our staff was able to experience ancient crafts, listen to producers who enthusiastically love to measure themselves with tradition and authenticity but also, with innovation », explain the staff of the new restaurant. –
