The Region wants to ask for the recognition for the millenary plants

LURAS. The millenary olive from Luras is a good for everyone and must be valued and protected. The Region is also well aware that months ago it had allocated 150 thousand euros for the natural patriarch. Yesterday, the Councilor for the Environment, Gianni Lampis, visited it. “The Region is firmly committed to protecting the island’s landscape and environment and aims to develop and strengthen the regional ecological network, consisting of the system of parks and marine protected areas and the Natura 2000 sites, which contributes to enhancing biodiversity »Said the commissioner during the visit to the site, with the mayor Mauro Azzena. Inside the site is the olive tree known as the “Patriarch of nature”, which was declared, in 2013 by regional decree, a natural monument and is included in the list of twenty centuries-old Italian trees to be protected. The tree has about 4000 years and is among the oldest in Europe.

«A natural monument overlooking the shores of Lake Liscia, together with other very ancient wild olive trees – added the commissioner – An identity garrison that represents an opportunity for tourist attraction for the entire territory. Therefore, the regional council, convinced that the millennial olive tree is a valuable asset of Sardinia, has decided to allocate 150 thousand euros in favor of the Municipality for the protection and enhancement of the entire site that hosts it. A loan that will make it possible to complete the enhancement actions, including, in addition to agronomic interventions, the safety measures with the reconstruction of dry stone walls, forestry works to prevent fires and the paving of the access road. The Region evaluates the possibility of asking for recognition as a Unesco heritage for the millennial olive tree ». (s.d.)
