Now in the light of the last words of the new national secretary Enrico Letta on the need to reorganize a party from the base also in Catania, a debate has opened on the role of the democratic party.
With a letter to question himself is also Otello Marilli, until recently one of the figures of the left in the city, very close to the ideas of the former democratic undersecretary Giuseppe Berretta. Marilli wonders how it is possible to open a debate on the future of the Democratic Party in Catania. “The 2018 administrative authorities handed over the city government to the right, the results of the Pogliese administration are available to everyone’s judgment. However, the impression one gets is that in Catania there is an incomplete political confrontation: the absence of the left, or the center-left if you prefer, from the political debate gives the figure of a profound crisis that has its plastic image in the ballot paper. three years ago when the symbol of the Democratic Party was not presented. The Pd from Catania should have used that defeat to rethink and to deal with the last 25-30 years of activity. Let me be clear, starting from the national level the Democratic Party must face the unresolved issues of its ambiguities, but in Catania, if possible, these seem more inextricable and more sclerotic. The Democratic Party should have the courage to “occupy” this space: we are the ones who believe that Catania can be saved if it saves one’s job, if it guarantees the construction of a social protection network for those who were fragile before Covid and those who were there rediscovered because of him, we are the ones who think that every single euro that reaches the municipality must go to the construction of local welfare (starting with childcare services). Catania is becoming increasingly impoverished: small and large companies are closing down; a social fabric that was already tried by the flight of entire generations literally rebounded away from the lack of prospects of Sicily is becoming even more impoverished. We risk a worse crisis after the pandemic and it is not necessary to be a good prophet to imagine that it will be fertile ground for speculation and the interests of organized crime. The biggest fear is that while it would be necessary to build the Catania of 2050, the city goes back 50 years.
