The return of Patti Smith, the queen of rock: “I’m back in the world, music is freedom”

The singer will be on stage in Lignano on Tuesday 13th. “I haven’t sing for a year and a half, I’m happy to start over from Italy”

UDINE. Twenty-seven against (almost) seventy-five years. An unequal confrontation, reverential admiration of the youngest, who asks the questions, towards the older one, who answers. The story may end there, but the key to greatness lies in the little things. “At this age I look at situations from the opposite perspective and it is I who am happy when the new generations are interested in my work. We can therefore say that we are both honored.”

This is Patti Smith. The diva, the queen of rock, the living legend of international music, who finally returns to Italy. Tomorrow evening the festival organized by Fvg Music Live and VignaPR in collaboration with the Municipality of Lignano and PromoTurismoFvg will be in concert at the Alpe Adria Arena in Lignano Sabbiadoro for Nottinarena (starting at 9 pm, tickets still available on Ticketone.it and in the sales points authorized).

Warm up the strings, light up the voices, because tonight belongs to Patti Smith. We start traveling again, we start playing again. Is it finally back to normal?

«I would not say that everything has returned to being normal – replies the artist -. And I think we shouldn’t expect that. We must proceed in small steps. This is the first step with which I return to the world. I have not performed in Europe for a year and a half, in fact I have not really done concerts, except for a few small performances. And I am extremely happy to start over from Italy. In fact, my relationship with the Italians is special, they have always welcomed me with great affection and therefore I know that they will forgive me if I could seem a little rusty ».

A love from and for Italy that almost has a taste of other times.

«My history with Italy goes back a very long time. I remember the first time I came here alone to promote “Horses” and I found hundreds of young people to welcome me. Everything about this country has always fascinated me. Bars, restaurants, people on the street, humanity in general. And then art and architecture, I am thinking of Giotto, Leonardo, Michelangelo. But also the opera, with Puccini and Verdi, and the great Italian films and directors. And my favorite book as a child was Pinocchio. It is a simply wonderful country ».

In 2019 there was also a special meeting with our region.

«I was really happy to be in Trieste, I always carried within me the romantic desire to visit this city, I felt it would be a place to feel good. Even the name alone is beautiful. I stayed there for a couple of days and didn’t want to leave again. I really loved her ».

Has humanity changed with this pandemic?

“I think the twenty-first century is reserving great changes for us, for several factors. Just think of technological progress, with its positive and negative sides. However, we are also losing contact with nature and are witnessing the terrible repercussions and climate change. One of the positive aspects that we can grasp from this pandemic is that we are rethinking our lives, what we want to do with them, how we intend to lead them. And perhaps we will also understand that a pandemic is a crisis that does not affect a single city or a single country, but is instead something global, just like climate change. And I hope that humans realize the repercussions of global crises. I also think that each of us will need time to regain confidence, and this also applies to me. It will take time to rediscover oneself and new oneself ».

Måneskin on the Eurovision stage said that rock’n’roll will never die. It’s really like this?

«Personally I believe that rock’n’roll has transformed and is transformed by the new generations. Rock was born from the revolutionary spirit and therefore should always be revolutionary, according to the way in which each generation makes it their own. Now things are changing a lot, there are so many women and female bands who play fantastic and write revolutionary music. And so rock is like poetry, it transforms and changes all the time, but it’s here to stay.

And what is punk rock for Patti Smith?

“For me it is freedom.”
