On January 29, Netflix will premiere ‘Griselda’, a 6-episode series starring Barranquilla actress Sofía Vergarawho personifies the role of Griselda Blanco, Colombian drug trafficker and criminal known as ‘The Black Widow’ or ‘The Godmother’.

Blanco was born in Cartagena, Bolívar, in 1943. Since she was a child, she suffered from physical violence and sexual abuse that marked her for life, as recorded in documents that narrate her personal life and how she managed to become the most powerful woman in drug trafficking, therefore who some say was one of the founders of the Medellín Cartel, led by Pablo Escobar.

At eleven years, ‘The Black Widow’ formed his first criminal gang: a group of pickpockets that robbed in the most dangerous neighborhoods of Medellín. The criminal was married three times. Her first partner was Carlos Trujillo, a visa forger and father of her three children. The second was Alberto Bravo, a small trafficker who introduced her to the world of drug trafficking.

In the 70s, Griselda and Bravo had expanded their business and, above all, their name. She was ‘The Patron’ and he had taken a backseat. So much so that Bravo ended up dead after a shootout between the two.

Griselda Blanco’s third and last husband was Darío Sepúlveda, father of her fourth child, Michael Corleone., named after the drug trafficker’s favorite movie, The Godfather. She was nicknamed ‘The Black Widow’ for murdering 3 of her husbands.

Griselda Blanco moved to Miami, United States, to expand her cocaine manufacturing, trafficking and marketing business. On February 17, 1985 she was captured at her home and found guilty of drug trafficking. She was accused of the murder of three Cuban citizens.

During his prison sentence, three of his children were murdered. Once she was released in 2004, she was deported to Colombia and led a quiet life. Griselda Blanco was shot to death on September 3, 2012, at the age of 69.in a butcher shop in the city of Medellín.
