The historic structure donated to the municipal administration by “Chei de Latarie”. Mayor Paladin aims to find the necessary funds to be able to renovate it

MAJANO. Since last Tuesday, the historic Susans dairy has been owned by the Municipality of Majano.

The vote in the city council, which last summer had accepted the donation of the “Chei de Latarie di Susans” association, was followed by the signature at the bottom of the modal deed before the notary who yesterday formalized the transfer of ownership.

A gift that is accompanied by a commitment asked of the local authority: to keep the cheese production room intact and possibly create a small museum in the milk production room, safeguarding the appearance of the building.

The building, of 1,018 cubic meters with a perimeter of 15 by 12 meters, was erected with rural architecture and is located in the center of the hamlet of which it has been one of the beating hearts for over 60 years.

“With this deed, the dairy becomes the property of the Municipality, which will undertake to recover the funds to restructure it – said the mayor of Majano, Raffaella Paladin – and make it available to local associations”.

The mayor once again underlines the importance of the dairy for the community “It is a piece of our history, an example of the rural economy that has fueled the community for a long time and which deserves to be preserved – pointed out the first citizen – as a testimony of our past ».

The umpteenth testimony given that a few kilometers away, in the hamlet of Casasola, the local pro loco is in turn working on the restructuring of the dairy, with the intention of making it a museum where to exhibit the equipment that was used to produce the cheese.

Returning to Susans, the community has taken care of the dairy since 1912 when, on the initiative of the parish priest Don Angelo Guerra, the cooperative society for the dairy was born, involving all the heads of the families.

The numbers show how important this reality has taken over the years. The golden age dates back to the middle of the last century with 84 members and a milk production of 2,500 quintals.

Subsequently, the social base was reduced until, in 1973, the dairy processing ceased, while the activity of the dairy continued until the 1990s, then transferred to the Medio Tagliamento Cooperative in Spilimbergo.
