Violence in Haiti Prompts US Calls for Prime Ministerās Return
WASHINGTON ā The United States has expressed concern over the wave of violence gripping Haiti, calling for Prime Minister Ariel Henryās return to his country to address the escalating situation.
Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the State Department, emphasized the importance of Henryās return, stating, āIt is our understanding that the prime minister is returning to the country. We think it is important that he does it and that he is allowed to do it.ā
āWe are closely monitoring the situation and condemn the gangsā efforts to further destabilize and take control of Haiti,ā Miller added.
Miller also highlighted the sanctions imposed on Haitian gang members for human rights abuses and ties to drug trafficking. He stressed the urgency of finalizing the Multinational Security Support Mission to assist the Haitian National Police in addressing the deteriorating security situation in the country.
Responding to concerns about the safety of the US embassy in Port-au-Prince, Miller confirmed that it remains open but will operate in a limited capacity without public services for the first three days of the week due to the ongoing violence in the Haitian capital.
