Yair Diomedes Cuesta Córdoba, mayor of Medio Atrato, reported that he visited the communities of Tanguí, Boca de Amé and Tauchigadó to learn about the current state of the mills and move forward with the implementation of a project to strengthen viche production that seeks to benefit 200 families from the municipality.
Viche or biche is a typical artisanal alcoholic drink from the Colombian Pacific. It is made from the juice of sugar cane cut before maturation and different ingredients are added to give it a pleasant flavor. The alcohol content is similar to other distilled beverages such as brandy, its ethyl content borders on 35% alcohol. Other typical drinks are derived from viche such as Arrechón, which includes cloves and aromatic spices, Tumbacatre, with essence of borojó and chontaduro, and Tomaseca.
The mayor was accompanied by the secretary of economic development and natural resources of the department, the Rural Development Agency, the Territory Renewal Agency, the Ombudsman and the councilor of Amé.
The project contributes to the conservation of customs and opens new doors for the commercialization of viche at the regional and national level.
The project also contemplates the strengthening of this activity in communities along the Buey River, which are also dedicated to the production of viche.
