The New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently seeking communications technicians to work on the 911 Emergency Line. The job, which may involve different schedules including night hours, weekends, and holidays, offers pay per shift as well as a night shift pay differential.

In order to qualify for the position, candidates must be at least 18 years old and either a citizen or legal resident. They must also pass a written exam and psychological exams, have a minimum of 4 years of high school, complete at least 30 university credits, and have completed 2 years of military service with an honorable discharge.

The deadline to register for the exam is January 23, and the starting salary for the position is $42,976 – $49,422. Employees with 3 or more years of service can expect to earn $48,692 – $58,189.

Before obtaining the role, candidates will be required to undergo a formal investigation and pay a $75 fee for a fingerprint test. They must also pass a drug test, be proficient in English, satisfy immigration requirements, and pass a civil service exam for Police Communication Technician.

To apply for and take the exam at the DCAS Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC), candidates must create an online account and provide personal information. The NYPD is open to answering questions about the process and has provided a chat service available Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
