They promote organ and tissue donation to save lives in Huila

by admin

With the aim of promoting the culture of organ and tissue donation in the department of Huila, health authorities have joined forces to raise awareness in the community about the importance of this noble action.

In a meeting led by the Huila Health Secretariat, concern was highlighted regarding the low rate of organ and tissue donation in the region. Dr. Hernán Sarrias, CRUE doctor and representative of the Ministry of Health, expressed his concern due to the lack of will of families to allow donation processes that could save lives. According to Sarrias, of eleven families approached, 91% have refused to donate, which reflects an alarming situation.

Dr. Cristian Andrés Gómez, coordinating physician of the transplant unit at the Neiva University Hospital, emphasized the need to raise awareness and overcome cultural barriers that hinder organ donation. A comprehensive awareness program was proposed in educational centers and companies to inform about the benefits of donation and demystify unfounded fears.

The low donation rate in Huila is a challenge that health authorities are determined to address. According to figures from the Ministry of Health, family refusal is very high, which significantly reduces the chances of saving lives through transplants.

Belén Perdomo, a twice transplanted person, urged the community to overcome fears and contribute to saving lives through organ donation. He highlighted the importance of receiving accurate information about this process and breaking cultural taboos surrounding donation.

In addition to organ transplantation, the relevance of tissue transplantation, such as corneas and heart valves, was highlighted to improve the quality of life of those who need it. Gloria Mercedes Celis Victoria, executive director of the Tissue Bank of the Southern Regional of Bantejido, stressed the need to educate the population about this little-known but equally vital practice.
