Thieves in the church in Colfosco, do not touch the offerings and take away the Child Jesus

The crib of the parish church of Colfosco in Susegana

Anger in the hamlet of Susegana for the sacrilegious theft committed against the Nativity of the parish church

SUSEGANA. The Baby Jesus from the crib set up in the church of Colfosco was stolen. The sacrilegious theft was discovered on Monday evening by the parishioners who are in charge of controlling the building.

The church remains open during the day for the faithful who want to pray. During the day, however, someone entered to subtract the statues from the representation of the Nativity, which, like every year, some volunteers had set up in a side apse. It was evidently not a question of thieves in search of money. Nothing else has disappeared, unlike the past when the offering boxes inside the sacred building were broken into.

At the moment, no hypothesis can be excluded: perhaps the deliberate gesture of a profaner, an offense to religion, an act of hooliganism by the baby vandals, a stunt or something else. “Of course, it is not the value of the statuette that represents a problem, but the meaning of the gesture itself that is certainly to be condemned”, explains Emiliano Zuccolotto, assistant moderator of the Susegana pastoral unit, who discovered the theft together with other parishioners of Colfosco. Neither priests nor nuns live in the hamlet anymore, and in this period the parish kindergarten is also closed for holidays. So the church is more “isolated”, unfortunately less manned, and the perpetrators of the coup remain unknown: there are no witnesses to what happened. The gesture aroused indignation in Susegana and also in Conegliano, where similar precedents are remembered.
