Essen-Kettwig. The bridge over the Rinderbach in Essen-Kettwig is now closed. The city explains why everyone’s safety is at risk.
The alarm was triggered on Friday, April 12th, by a special inspection of the abutments of the bridge that leads over the Rinderbach on Volckmarstrasse in Essen-Kettwig. Drill cores were taken to assess the load-bearing capacity of the bridge.
The concrete removed was very light and had no strength, which is why the structural engineer present ordered that the bridge be closed to motor vehicles immediately.
The bridge is a structure that is over 100 years old (it was built around 1910). It consists of steel beams placed on abutments in concrete.
Cyclists have to push their vehicle along the sidewalk
Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the bridge. However, cyclists should push their bikes as the road is closed and they are guided along the sidewalk.

The city of Essen reports that no statements can be made at the moment about further measures or the duration of the closure. A diversion route will be set up and will take car traffic via Landsberger Straße towards August-Thyssen-Straße.
The closure for trucks had been in place since September
There was already a diversion for vehicles over 3.5 tons because damage was discovered on the Rinderbach Bridge in September 2023. As a precautionary measure, driving over the bridge was limited to 3.5 tons.
The Kettwig community bus is also affected by the now extended closure. It still needs to be clarified whether he can continue to drive on the bridge or also take the detour.
