This New Jersey Animal Shelter Will Neuter Your Ex, Well, Sort Of

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood, New Jersey has found a unique solution for anyone who has ever felt like their ex shouldn’t breed. In a Valentine’s Day promotion, the shelter is offering to name a feral cat after a donor’s ex and then neuter or spay the cat in question.

The shelter announced the promotion on Instagram, joking, “Because some things shouldn’t be reproduced.” Each name requires a $50 donation, which will go towards the shelter’s “trap-neuter-return” program for feral cats. The program is aimed at controlling the feral cat population by breaking the breeding cycle and preventing unwanted cats from being born into the community.

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center’s creative Valentine’s Day offer is just one of the many unique anti-Valentine’s Day promotions that zoos and animal shelters have implemented for unlucky lovers. Other examples include the San Antonio Zoo naming a cockroach after an ex and feeding it to an animal, as well as the Lexington Humane Society writing the name of your choice inside a litter box for a kitten to do its business for a $10 donation.

The trap-neuter-return program is a humane and effective method for managing community cat populations, according to the ASPCA. The program has been implemented by shelters and volunteer groups across the country, and donations help cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery for community cats and their caregivers.

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center’s unique Valentine’s Day promotion is not only an opportunity to get revenge on an ex, but also a way to support their vital program for feral cat population control.
