Former paramilitary leader Salvatore Mancuso arrived in Colombia on Tuesday afternoon, February 27, after serving his sentence in the United States. Images shared by the National Police show Mancuso heavily guarded with a bulletproof vest and a combat helmet upon his arrival.
Mancuso, who was extradited in May 2008 along with 13 other paramilitary leaders for continuing to commit crimes despite signing a peace agreement, was not alone in his return. He flew on a plane of the United States Government along with nearly 100 other Colombians who were also deported from the North American nation.
The National Police closely monitored Mancuso upon his arrival, verifying the judicial requirements for the crimes he will have to answer for in Colombia. There are at least 13 requests against him from courts of justice and peace throughout the country, ranging from conspiracy to commit a crime to aggravated homicide.
After completing the immigration process, Mancuso issued a statement expressing his willingness to collaborate with justice and truth commitments. He emphasized that despite the measures taken against him, he is prepared to face the charges and contribute to the clarification of the conflict.
Mancuso was then transferred to the Dijín dungeons under a strong escort and will be held in La Picota. The former paramilitary chief’s return to Colombia has sparked significant interest and concern as he prepares to face his legal battles in the country.
