Thousands are once again demonstrating against right-wing extremism in Hamburg

The organizers, an alliance around the Fridays for Future movement, have registered 30,000 participants for the meeting. Police information on the current number of participants was initially not available shortly after the event began.

After a rally with a speech by climate activist Luisa Neubauer, there will be an approximately 3.5 kilometer long demonstration procession through the city center. More than 40 organizations called for the demo, including several environmental organizations such as Greenpeace and BUND, the tenants’ association, the DGB and the Hamburg Alliance Against the Right.

Canceled due to too many people

Most recently, a demonstration against right-wing extremism in the Hanseatic city was canceled on Friday of last week because many more participants came than expected. Instead of 10,000, according to the organizers there were 80,000 people, the police said the number was 50,000 demonstrators. After this rush, the organizers of the demo reacted on Sunday and moved the originally planned meeting location on Jungfernstieg to Ludwig-Erhard-Straße. The motto of the demo is “For diversity and our democracy – Hamburg stands together against the AfD”.
