Three cases of legionella, two people ended up in hospital

PORDENONE. There is not only Sars-Cov-2. The summer, for some years now, has also been counting on the front of other viruses, such as the West Nile Virus and Legionella.

The attention for a year and a half has been captured by the coronavirus, but the health authorities of Pordenone and the province have not forgotten the other infections.

Among these, Legionella, which has already made its appearance in western Friuli in this summer 2021: “We have had some sporadic cases – said Massimo Crapis, head of the infectious disease facility of the Asfo (Western Friuli Health Authority) – which is predictable in the summertime”.

No “outbreak”, but isolated cases: three, two of which had to resort to hospital treatment, all resolved positively. One of these situations involved a person returning from a trip.

Legionella, which takes its name from the first time the virus was isolated at a gathering of former legionaries in a hotel in the United States, is present in natural and man-made aquatic environments from where it can reach pipes and pipes. It is normally acquired by the respiratory route, with aspiration of aerosol containing the virus.

No outbreak, therefore, for now in the province, as occurred last year in Aviano, but only sporadic cases, identified and treated.

The summer for a few years has been dealing with another risk, the last to arrive in chronological order: the West Nile Virus, carried by common mosquitoes, which leads to an asymptomatic infection in 80 percent of cases and in 20 percent to pseudo flu symptoms. Only in 0.1 percent of cases can more serious consequences occur.

“For now – continued Crapis – in Italy there have been episodes in Liguria and Emilia Romagna and in the latter case in a group of mosquitoes”. The observatory for this infection is at the National Blood Center which, last week, recorded the presence of the virus for now in two provinces: La Spezia and Modena.

The National Blood Center has ordered the strengthening of surveillance on birds, mosquitoes and farms, from May until the end of November. Controls that also pass through the capture and analysis, by the Zooprophylactic Institute of the Tre Venezie for the province of Pordenone, of common mosquitoes, one of the main vectors, with special traps. –
