Tomáš Zálešák: Fico celebrated Husák – and himself | Opinions | .a week

according to Fico’s words published on his website, Husák “showed unprecedented courage in organizing the SNP, where he was threatened with terrible torture and execution on an hourly basis. Then he was dealt with by extreme lunatics in the ranks of the communists, they locked him up, beat him, knocked out his teeth…” And besides: “…he prevented reprisals in the normalization 70s. He was always associated with education and intelligence. He also made mistakes, but who hasn’t made them and doesn’t make them… After the battle, everyone is a general.”

It must be recognized that Fico knows how to “weigh words”. Even in the moments when he roars like a bull and seems to have completely lost control of himself. Especially where, under a much more polished coating, he slips a misinterpretation of history. And even what can’t possibly be kept quiet, he knows how to “present” appropriately.

And yet it doesn’t take much effort for us to discover a much more sinister message beneath the very thin surface of polished and worn phrases.

First, the Slovak National Uprising itself had more heroes. Several of them did not escape death in battle, or even the aforementioned torture and execution. Of course, we shouldn’t ask Fico to remember everyone today or at any other time during the year, after all, that’s not even technically possible. However, it can be doubted whether he is interested in such a thing. That would mean mentioning some extremely uncomfortable facts.
