The intervention of the Coast Guard avoided the worst for the 13 occupants of a boat on which a fire broke out off the coast of Trapani. This afternoon the alarm went off in the Operations Room of the Port Authority of Trapani for a rescue call via the Blue emergency number 1530, concerning a fire started aboard a pleasure boat of about 9.5 meters in length. length, chartered by some Italian tourists, which was at sea 2.5 miles southwest of the port of Trapani where it was returning to the mooring.
As soon as the emergency call was received, three patrol boats of the Port Authority of Trapani CP 770, CP 330 and CP 849 departed, two already at sea for institutional services and the third moored at the military quay of the port. In just 10 minutes the first CP 770 patrol boat reached the unit from which an evident black smoke was emitting and recovered all 13 passengers on board (10 adults and 3 minors), bringing them back safely, safe and sound to the port of Trapani .
In the meantime, the other two patrol boats CP 330 and CP 849 arrived, which supervised, controlled and interdicted the sea area where the boat was on fire to facilitate the fire extinguishing operations carried out by the naval unit of the Brigade of the Trapani fire, also alerted by the Operations Room of the Harbor Master’s Office and immediately intervened in the sea area where the accident had occurred. The operations to extinguish the fire, which had arisen in the engine compartment of the unit for reasons yet to be ascertained, lasted for about an hour but the boat, now engulfed by the flames that had affected the fiberglass of the hull, sank at 19:00 about on a seabed of about 18 meters deep.
