Udine, the emergency room is in an emergency: a patient has been waiting for three days

Infections among emergency workers are increasing: those who remain are forced to work overtime. One woman waited 72 hours before being taken into charge. The Nursind: “Unsustainable”

UDINE. A deadly mix, which is putting a strain on the staff of the emergency room of the Santa Maria della Misericordia: in the less suitable period of the year, that of the holidays, not only the number of accesses increases, but also that of positive operators.

On Friday evening, three nurses from the Ps Covid had to raise the white flag, stopped by a positive test: a threefold stop which inevitably led to the reshaping of staff shifts, with the activation of “ready availability” (a system that provides for a more immediate availability for staff).

And because of this difficulty, since yesterday in the “clean” emergency room (where non-positive users access), short intensive observation is not guaranteed.

A difficult situation, made even more explosive by the number of accesses increasing in the last hours: on Friday evening in the Covid Emergency Department there were fourteen users waiting to be examined, a dozen of whom were destined for hospitalization.

With extended waiting times: an elderly woman was forced to wait even 72 hours before treatment.

“With the low numbers that we have, given the summer holidays and the continuous positivizations even among nurses, the only possible choice was the activation of the so-called” ready availability “which, in the face of a paltry indemnity (indemnity that in any case would have no price given the level of psychophysical stress that we have now reached) provides for the recall to night service of a nurse who has already done a night the day before – reports the provincial secretary of Nursind, Afrim Caslli -. All this demonstrates the total lack of regard and protection towards us nurses already tormented by two and a half years of Covid “emergency”.

The situation has long since passed the definition of “difficult” and “problematic” and has become unsustainable. Moreover, since yesterday, also given the infections among nurses that are widely predictable given the curve of the epidemic and the psychophysical stress to which they are subjected, even the brief intensive observation disappears from the PS: this means that they take away what certain nights is the the only place in Asu Fc (from Tolmezzo to Lignano) where you can monitor someone and guarantee semi-intensive assistance ».
