The conditions of the historic church have worsened since the nearby junction was opened: “It all trembles”

The historic church of San Giuseppe that watches over the cemetery of Sant’Andrea loses its tiles and cracks. “Looking at the north-facing roof that covers the entrance loggia of the church, from which some tiles have slipped – warns Michele Bastanzetti, district councilor in Ceneda, founder of the” Sac “committee – you can see an accentuated bending of the edge of the pitch which unfortunately suggests structural damage of a certain extent. A few meters from the church, very dear to the Victorians, runs the link road of the Santa Augusta Tunnel. “The problems probably began – explains Bastanzetti – with the excavation and scraping of via Carso along the west wall that supports the embankment in front of the church, and with the reconstruction of the roadbed and further excavation on the other side of the road to place the foundations of the sound-absorbing panels ».
The large excavation turned out to be 5-6 meters deep for about ten sides, between the roundabout and the north-west corner of the cemetery, within which the basins for collecting and decanting the waters of the southern part of the tunnel road were placed. “This excavation, although about ten meters away from the church, was not contained by a wall or a Berliner but simply filled with backfill, which can cause secondary settlement movements all around”, points out Bastanzetti, who has repeatedly reported the precariousness of the building.
The vibrations of the traffic, enormously increased next to the church, including the heavy one, are having consequences that could be irreparable. The church is managed by the parish of Sant’Andrea which, even before the construction of the tunnel, had raised the problem of the proximity of the road to the cemetery and, in fact, the chapel. But he made sure there would be no structural problems. «In truth – says Bastanzetti – the traffic is more intense than expected and, above all, there are very heavy loads.
