Salinas County in California has emerged as a surprising hotspot for Hispanic heritage in the United States, with nearly half of its population being of Spanish origin, according to a recent study by Business Insider.
While many may assume that a city like Los Angeles in California would have the highest percentage of Spanish-speaking residents, it is actually Salinas County that takes the top spot with 47.5% of its population identifying as Hispanic. The study also found that 45% of Salinas residents speak Spanish.
Located seven hours away from Tijuana, Baja California, Salinas County is nestled between San Diego and Los Angeles in California. It is one of the cities in a list compiled by Business Insider that includes other predominantly Hispanic cities such as Las Cruces and Deming in New Mexico, Espanola in New Mexico, and Uvalde and Hereford in Texas.
Interestingly, Texas stands out in the list with 10 cities where the Spanish language is prevalent among its residents, including the border cities of El Paso, Brownsville-Harlingen, and Laredo.
The findings of this study highlight the diverse linguistic landscape of the United States and the significant presence of Hispanic heritage in various regions across the country. Salinas County, in particular, serves as a shining example of the rich cultural tapestry that makes up the American population.
