Why is Palm Sunday commemorated?

Today marks the official beginning of Holy Week 2024. It commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus of Nazareth into Jerusalem in the midst of a crowd that acclaims him and recognizes him as the Messiah. With Palm Sunday.

According to the Gospels, Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem riding a donkey, as the Prince of Peace, since scholars reason that he would have chosen a horse if he had wanted to symbolize war.

The people placed their cloaks and tree branches in front of him, singing part of Psalm 118: 25-2618 -Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Therefore, on this date Catholics go to churches to bless their palms.

This week consists of eight days of religious celebration, which begins on Palm Sunday and concludes with Easter Sunday.

The Eucharist of this day has two important moments. On the one hand, the procession along the path of olive trees and palms and, on the other, the reading of the word of God, which evokes the Passion of the Lord, recorded in the gospel of Saint Matthew.

Thus, during this week, Colombians prepare for one of the most important seasons of 2024, Holy Week, a time to reflect, get closer to God, pray, and for many also a date to rest from their work activities and educational.

Finally, “Jesus’ entry into the city is always described as a triumph in shared cultural tradition, recalling the way kings entered a city. The Gospels also proclaim it as a ‘fulfillment of prophecy.’”
