Hundreds of workers from the Judicial Branch of the Federation (PJF) gathered this Sunday in Mexico City to express their firm rejection of the reform that seeks to elect judges, magistrates and ministers by popular vote, as well as to demand respect for autonomy and judicial independence.
From the early hours of the morning, judges and magistrates from different states of Mexico gathered around the emblematic Angel of Independence on Paseo de la Reforma, where they set up a stand to defend their position against the controversial reform of the Judiciary.
Protected by metal fences, the protesters made their loud voices heard against attempts to reduce the PJF’s budget and eliminate trusts earmarked for it, while highlighting the importance of its work in society.
Among the messages transmitted during the protest, retired minister Arturo Zaldívar was criticized for his foray into politics after leaving the Mexican Supreme Court in 2023 to join the campaign of the ruling party Claudia Sheinbaum.
Wearing white t-shirts with slogans such as ‘#AllSomosPJF’ and ‘The PJF works to defend rights. Today we have to defend ourselves to defend you’, as well as posters with slogans such as ‘The law is the law’ and ‘The people did not choose me, but I chose to work for the people’, the workers made clear their commitment to judicial independence and its rejection of any attempt to violate it.
This demonstration was not only limited to the capital, but was also replicated in other places in the country, marking the third national mobilization of the workers of the Judiciary in search of the defense of judicial independence and the division of powers.
