2024 Hong Kong Marathon Attracts 74,000 Runners, African Participants Dominate

Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong, January 21 (Reporters Lu Yun and Wei Hua) – The 2024 Hong Kong Marathon kicked off with a gunshot on the 21st, attracting approximately 74,000 runners from around the world. This annual event in Hong Kong’s sports community saw six runners from Africa dominating the top three spots in both the men’s and women’s marathon categories.

The event featured three categories – full marathon, half marathon, and 10km – with the starting point of the full and half marathon on Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, and the 10km category starting from the Eastern District Corridor. All categories concluded in Victoria Park.

The competition also hosted the Asian Marathon Championships, inviting overseas runners to participate. The suitable temperature in Hong Kong on the day of the event contributed to the excellent performance of the players.

Mr. Lee Ka-chiu, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, presided over the starting ceremony of the competition. After a fierce competition, Serio from Kenya emerged as the champion of the men’s marathon, crossing the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 51 seconds. The women’s championship was secured by Armino of Ethiopia, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes and 47 seconds.

The men’s half marathon and men’s 10km championships were won by Sun Xiaoyang and Chen Yufan from Mainland China, respectively.

The 2024 Hong Kong Marathon showcased an impressive display of athleticism and international participation, cementing its status as a prominent event in the global running community.
