3D technology resolves the question of Barcelona’s ‘ghost goal’ in the Classic

The controversial ‘ghost goal’ play in the Classic match where Real Madrid beat FC Barcelona 3-2 has sparked heated debate among fans and players alike. The incident, in which it is unclear if the ball completely crossed the goal line, has left many questioning the need for goal line technology in LaLiga.

Former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez expressed his disappointment, stating “It is a shame that there is no goal technology.” Without the application of ‘hawk’s eye’ technology, it is difficult to definitively determine whether the goal should have been awarded.

In an effort to shed light on the contentious play, Canal + France and Being Sports both utilized 3D technology to analyze the footage and confirm that the ball did not fully cross the goal line. This technology, which is already in use in other top leagues such as the Champions League and the Premier League, could provide much-needed clarity in similar situations in LaLiga.

The question now arises: How much would it cost to implement ‘Hawk eye’ technology in Spain? Reports suggest that introducing this technology would cost LaLiga four million euros per season, with two million designated for the First Division and another two million for the Second Division. While the initial investment may seem significant, the benefits of increased accuracy and fairness in decision-making could greatly enhance the quality of matches in the Spanish league.
