3rd League: Unterhaching exacerbates the Lions’ problems with a derby victory

SpVgg Unterhaching also won the second Munich S-Bahn derby of the season. At TSV 1860, the defeat made the relegation worries even more acute.

The players from SpVgg Unterhaching and TSV 1860 Munich had to wait 26 minutes until it finally started. First in the dressing room, then on the pitch. A banner of the numerous 1860 fans who had made the short journey to the S-Bahn derby in the Unterhaching sports park probably blocked an emergency exit. The stewards then feared a storm from the Löwen block and ordered a police squadron to the corner while the teams passed the ball to each other to keep warm.

Stiefler uses inattention in the 1860 defense

And so it wasn’t surprising that the teams needed a little time to get up to speed after kick-off. Or to put it positively: Both teams defended very compactly and hardly allowed any chances to score. It was the 31st minute when the first dangerous ball flew towards the goal net and it was right there: Unterhaching’s Simon Skarlatidis took a corner sharply towards the five-meter area, where Max Reinthaler completely overlooked the inrushing Manuel Stiefler, leaving him unchallenged could captivate.

It took a long time for the lions to respond, but they did. After a clever corner kick, Marlon Frey had a free shot in a central position from 25 meters. Rene Vollath directed the sharp ball over the crossbar, securing Unterhaching’s lead at the break (45′).

Headed again: Hobsch scores his 12th goal of the season

The second half started on time – but that initially didn’t change the direction of the clubs. Although TSV 1860 took over more of the game, there weren’t really any great chances on either side. The first excitement came from Morris Schröter, who got the ball in the Haching penalty area, but didn’t put it on target with his shot (52′).

The host did much better just a little later. The advanced Dennis Waidner was allowed to cross from the half field relatively unchallenged and found the head of Patrick Hobsch, who scored his 12th goal of the season from nine meters (58th). 1860 coach Argirios Giannikis reacted and replaced two committed but unfortunate players, Fynn Lakenmacher and Schröter. Nevertheless, opportunities were still in short supply. It wasn’t until the 70th minute that Reinthaler was completely free to head the ball after a corner, but the defender put it straight at keeper Vollath.

Almost immediately, Unterhaching had the chance to increase the score to 3-0. But Hobsch couldn’t use his freedom either, Marco Hiller made a spectacular save. It was supposed to be the last big chance of the game and so Unterhaching secured the derby victory with a concentrated and calm performance.

TSV 1860: Banger view of the table cellar

With the victory, Unterhaching not only wins the second Munich S-Bahn derby of the season, but will also probably be ahead of the Lions in the 3rd league at the end of the season. The lead is nine points with three games remaining. TSV 1860 is currently far away from such mental games. Once again the anxious look is towards the bottom of the table, from which the Lions are only five points away.

And the upcoming games are tough: On the next match day, the Munich team will host the second team from Borussia Dortmund before they face promotion hopefuls Rot-Weiss Essen. The last matchday could potentially be a dramatic clash between two traditional teams: Arminia Bielefeld will then be guests at the Grünwalder Stadium. Bielefeld is one point and one place behind TSV 1860. Giannikis’ team has the power to ensure that this game doesn’t turn into a relegation thriller.
