STVV won the anniversary match 1-0 against KVC Westerlo on Saturday evening. House analyst Jacky Mathijssen, who was a trainer at Stayen between 2001 and 2004, was full of praise for the atmosphere and the pride of the large audience afterwards.
“Everything was subordinate to the 100th anniversary. The players did what they had to do. The victory is always linked to such a moment in history. The match itself wasn’t great. It was a deserved victory for STVV, Westerlo was weaker than I expected. STVV has shown why they are higher in the rankings. In addition to the sporting image, what struck me most was the enthusiasm and experience of the supporters. Everyone in the stadium, no matter which stand or seat you were sitting in, everyone was part of the story of the hundred years. There was a lot of enthusiasm and pride to come and watch and the players added something to that. That is not always obvious. It was a successful evening on all levels. For me personally it was nice to see my staff from 2001 and 2004 again after a long time. Final conclusion? I saw nothing but happy and proud supporters around a football field, isn’t that the most beautiful thing? ”(svc)
