The Houston Astros are making a strong push to acquire star closer Josh Hader in free agency. Adding a left-handed reliever of Hader’s caliber would be a major boost for the Texas team as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
According to reports from Ken Rosenthal, Hader, who is 29 years old, is seeking a deal that would surpass the current record for the most expensive contract for a reliever. The current record is held by Puerto Rican pitcher Edwin Díaz, who received a $105 million contract from the New York Mets.
The addition of Hader would be crucial for the Astros’ bullpen, especially after the recent departures of key pitchers like Hector Neris, Ryne Stanek, and Phil Maton, as well as the loss of Kendall Graveman, who is expected to miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
With the potential addition of Hader, the Astros would have a formidable trio in their bullpen, along with Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu, which could significantly bolster their chances of securing victories in the upcoming season.
Hader put up impressive numbers last season with a 1.28 ERA, 13.6 K/9, and 33 saves in 61 games while playing for the San Diego Padres. It’s not just the Astros who are interested in acquiring Hader, as the reigning 2023 World Series champions, the Texas Rangers, are also reported to have inquired about the star closer, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
