L’Australian Open Of Matteo Berrettini ends, once again, due to a problem with his right foot, the same one involved in the ankle sprain suffered at the US Open against Arthur Rinderknech. The withdrawal prevented Berrettini from tackling Stefanos Tsitsipas in what would have been one of the hottest and most anticipated matches of the first round. The withdrawal follows an unfortunate period of inactivity that began at the end of the summer and a recovery that was never truly completed.
Berrettini, who had not obtained direct access to the main draws, should have participated in the ATP 250 qualifiers in Brisbane, but had postponed his departure for Australia. He had also been included among the protagonists of Kooyong Classicthe performance event in which he also took part Jannik Sinner. But even in that case, a few hours before his scheduled match against Dominic Thiem, the news of the withdrawal arrived.
It is not the first time that Berrettini has withdrawn from the Australian Open. In 2021 he was forced to withdraw before a match against Tsitsipas in the round of 16, for one abdominal strain remedied in the previous round against Khachanov.
