At the Australia Open, the heat continues to be extremely difficult for the tennis professional. This also applies to the British Jack Draper, who still wins. However, Angelique Kerber’s Grand Slam comeback will be a defeat.
The heat in Melbourne made it difficult for all tennis professionals on Tuesday. But Briton Jack Draper particularly suffered from the difficult conditions at the Australian Open. After defeating the American Marcos Giron in five sets after 3:20 hours, Draper just managed to shake hands at the net. Then he rushed to the nearest trash can and vomited.
He was visibly suffering during the game, but was able to finish the game and win. Terence Atmane was not granted this the day before. The Frenchman had to retire from the match against Russian Daniil Medvedev after he struggled with cramps and was no longer able to stand properly.

There’s good news for Draper now. When his second round game against the American Tommy Paul starts on Thursday, the temperature in Melbourne should be just over 20 degrees – more than ten degrees less than on Tuesday.
“It wasn’t a setback,” says Kerber
Angelique Kerber will no longer benefit from this. In her Grand Slam comeback, the 35-year-old was defeated by the American Danielle Collins 2:6, 6:3, 1:6 on Tuesday. Collins, in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season in 2022, converted her second match point after 1:52 hours. Kerber only returned to the tennis tour at the United Cup around the turn of the year after an 18-month baby break. “It wasn’t a setback at all,” said Kerber, who gave birth to a daughter in February 2023.

The three-set defeat clearly showed that Kerber still has a way to go if she really wants to keep up with the best in the industry again over the course of the year: “I know I have to be patient to find my routine on the court again. It was good at times, but I still need time. It’s still a big challenge and I’m taking it on.”
