The race of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the “BNP Paribas Open” ends in the semi-final – with the insult of a missed match point“, the first Masters 1000 of the season at Indian Wells Garden (hard, Plexipave – prize pool $9,495,555).
In the Italian night the blue couple – at their first participation together – they lost 46 76(7) 10-8, after more than two hours of fighting, allo Spanish Marcel Granollers and Argentine Horacio Zeballos, fifth seeding favorites (in the second round they had stopped Sinner/Sonego). The 37-year-old from Barcelona and the 38-year-old from Mar del Plata together have won eight doubles titles including five Masters 1000: Shanghai 2023, Cincinnati and Madrid 2021, Rome 2020, Montreal 2019. Granollers has never won doubles at Indian Wells, while Zeballos has yes: in 2019 with the Croatian Nikola Mektic.
In the Californian desert, the 38-year-old from Bologna from Budrio (finalist in 2015 with Fognini) and the 28-year-old from Turin made their debut by beating the Monegasque Hugo Nys and the Polish Jan Zielinski, while in the second round they benefited from the forfeit of the British Jamie Murray and the New Zealander Michael Venus, eighth seeding favourites. By overcoming the Americans Lammons/Withrow in the quarterfinals, the two Italians – finalists at the Australian Open and champions in Buenos Aires – had completed their 13th victory of the season.
Truly a start to 2024 to remember for Bolelli and Vavassori, individually number 25 and 26 in the ATP doubles ranking, but second best pair in the Race which only considers seasonal results and will then determine the eight teams competing at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. At the moment the two Italians with 1,990 points in the live ranking are only 250 points away from first position occupied by the Indian Rohan Bopanna and the Australian Matthews Ebden (2,240 points), winners at the Australian Open (beating Simone and Andrea), reigning champions at Indian Wells but already eliminated on their debut.
In the other semi-final opposite Instead the all-German couple formed by Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetzseventh seeding favorites, and the one composed by the Dutch Wesley Koolhof (finalist in 2023 with the British Skupski) and from Croatian Nikola Mektic (winner of the 2019 edition with the Argentine Zeballos).
