2024 NFL Draft odds: Vikings, Patriots are clear favorites to draft J.J. McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy’s surge is continuing in the lead up to the 2024 NFL Draft, as a team with a top-three pick is slowly becoming one of the favorites to draft the former Michigan star.

The Minnesota Vikings are the favorite to draft McCarthy with +125 odds, a spot they’ve held for much of the draft process. However, the New England Patriots are gaining steam, holding +205 odds to draft the quarterback prospect after he visited with the team on Monday and Tuesday.

With the Patriots’ odds of drafting McCarthy shortening, his odds of being a top pick are doing the same. He has +205 odds to be the third overall pick and -175 odds to be a top-five selection.

The Vikings and the Patriots are ahead of the pack to draft McCarthy with just over a week until the NFL Draft, and several mock drafts have had Minnesota moving up from the 11th overall pick into the top five in order to draft McCarthy.

FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt is among them, having the Vikings swap the 11th pick and more to the Los Angeles Chargers for the fifth.

However, Nick Wright has the Patriots drafting the quarterback with the third overall pick in his most recent mock draft, as rumors out of New England suggest that they’re highly interested in McCarthy.

“All of the reporting out of New England is Eliot Wolf, who is seemingly interviewing for the job that he currently holds, and the owner’s not going to step in, but as a fan, the owner would love a quarterback,” Wright said on “First Things First.” “The fan is going to hire the GM, so they’re drafting a quarterback. He likes J.J. McCarthy.”

The Giants, who have the No. 6 pick, still linger among the favorites to draft McCarthy. In fact, FOX Sports NFL insider Peter Schrager had New York trading up to the No. 4 pick to draft the prospect in his first mock draft for NFL Media.

“I know that the Giants have done all the work on and all the research on all of these quarterbacks, extensive on these top guys,” Schrager said on “The Herd.” “If they weren’t in the market for a quarterback, they wouldn’t be flying across the country to meet and take them out to dinner.

“The night before Easter, the Giants flew out to Ann Arbor and they took out J.J. McCarthy to Ruth’s Chris there. They had a great meeting. He’s since met with them again. Daniel Jones wasn’t drafted by Joe Schoen. He was not drafted by Brian Daboll. He was given $80 million by those two guys, but that contract is written in a way that they can get out of it after two years.”

Could Giants trade up for J.J. McCarthy?

FOX Sports NFL Draft expert Rob Rang has the Broncos selecting McCarthy with the 12th overall pick in his latest mock draft.

“The Broncos also are on the lookout for a quarterback, but with just two of the top 120 picks of the 2024 NFL draft at their disposal, Denver lacks the resources to realistically move up and will be at the mercy of the teams selecting ahead of them,” Rang wrote of the pick. “McCarthy lacks [Michael] Penix’s arm talent but is much younger, and his anticipation, athleticism, accuracy (including on the move) and team-first mentality match nicely with Sean Payton.”
