FC Bayern is planning the future in the goalkeeper position. Because Manuel Neuer’s career is not yet in sight, Alexander Nübel will, according to media reports, extend his contract until 2030, but will be loaned out to VfB Stuttgart for another year.
FC Bayern is sticking with Alexander Nübel as the successor to Manuel Neuer as number one in goal. According to media reports, the contract of the 27-year-old, who is on loan at VfB Stuttgart this season, will be extended early until 2030. But he should stay with the Swabians for another year. Like the Munich captain’s, Nübel’s contract runs until June 2025. It is still unclear whether the record champions’ captain will actually quit in 2025 and end his career.
Nevertheless, the Munich team wanted to extend Nübel’s contract – the FCB now sees a need for action, as clubs such as Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma have reportedly also shown interest in the keeper. FC Bayern apparently doesn’t want to risk losing him to potential interested parties and, according to the “Bild” newspaper and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, presented him with a working paper for signature until 2030.
Not an easy start for Nübel at FC Bayern
But the relationship between Alexander Nübel and FC Bayern was not always easy. Ex-Bayern official Hasan Salihamidzic lured the 27-year-old to Munich in 2020 as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer.
The then 23-year-old FC Schalke 04 keeper came to the Isar on a free transfer and was expected to succeed the German national goalkeeper in the not too distant future. However, no one at FC Bayern wanted to know anything about the guarantee that Nübel was said to have received.
In his first season in Munich, the young goalkeeper only made four competitive appearances and had to realize that there was no getting past the record champions’ number one goal. Neuer is still in the box four years later.
Via Monaco to Stuttgart
For Nübel, who didn’t want to waste time on the bench, he went to AS Monaco instead, where he was on loan as a regular goalkeeper (2021 to 2023) between the posts, although he was not permanently signed. After some disagreements with FC Bayern, the next stop in the current season was at VfB Stuttgart, where Nübel performed well. With the Swabians he is currently surprisingly level on points with FC Bayern in third place in the Bundesliga table. Also because of Nübel’s performance – he has kept 12 clean sheets so far this season – Stuttgart will probably qualify for the Champions League.
