Breakthrough for Serie A “Draghi will meet us or no championship”

MILANO

Serie A says no to the stew times for the championship, asks Draghi for an urgent meeting for the spectators but above all opens up a historic turning point for the Italian Cup and Super Cup. Mediaset has in fact wrested the TV rights of the tournament from Rai, which will thus be exclusively on the Biscione network for the next three years, both in clear and pay (as foreseen by the announcement) in a return to the past, considering that Fininvest was the first , at the beginning of the 90s, to make agreements to broadcast the Coppa Italia matches live. This is thanks to an offer, unveiled yesterday during the Lega assembly, of 48.2 million euros on average per season, better than the proposal of the public TV which confirmed only the radio rights for 400 thousand euros. Figures that represent an important growth for the League, which will collect an average of 48.6 million per season over the next three years: an increase of 37% compared to 2018/21.

Meanwhile, the step backwards on the subject of stew-times has arrived. During the assembly, in fact, the proposal was withdrawn, taking note in particular of the impossibility of avoiding disputes in the event that the League had continued with the plan to spread the 10 Serie A matches of each day at as many different times starting next season. A decision that follows particular weeks, considering that the proposal was initially approved by the clubs in the assembly of last June 7, only to then decide to cancel the resolution.

The clubs are looking forward to next season with concern, after the serious losses of recent years linked to the pandemic and in particular the absence of fans in the stands. A topic particularly dear to the presidents, so much so as to push them to vote unanimously the request for an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, with the Minister of Economic Development, Giancarlo Giorgetti, and with the Undersecretary for Sport Valentina Vezzali, waving the threat also of not starting the next championship. “The Serie A clubs complain of a state of crisis that is no longer bearable”, explained the League in a note, stressing the need for a meeting with the political leaders “to start the next championship”, a meeting necessary to find “solutions for the damage of 1.2 billion suffered by the clubs so far ”and establish the modalities“ for the total return of the public to the stands from the first day of next season in complete safety ”. –
