IOC President Supports WADA’s Handling of Chinese Swimmers’ Doping Case

On April 28, 2024, International Olympic Committee President Bach expressed his support for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s handling of the case involving Chinese swimmers who tested positive for trimetazidine due to pollution.

In an exclusive interview with AFP, Bach stated, “We have full confidence in WADA and the anti-doping rules themselves, and we firmly believe that WADA will abide by the rules.” This comes after WADA Chairman Banka confirmed that WADA followed all necessary procedures and investigations in the case.

The Chinese swimmers tested positive for trace amounts of trimetazidine during the National Swimming Competition in January 2021. However, the China Anti-Doping Center conducted a thorough investigation and determined that the athletes unknowingly ingested the substance through contaminated food at the event, rather than intentional doping.

After a full review of the case, WADA agreed that the contamination was a plausible explanation for the positive tests. As a result, the athletes will not be punished for the incident, and the case will not be treated as a doping violation.

The IOC President’s support for WADA’s handling of the case highlights the importance of fair and thorough investigations in anti-doping efforts in sports. The athletes involved can now continue their careers without facing sanctions for unintentional contamination.
