The Feletto – Monte Zoncolan was not only the ninth and decisive stage of the 2021 Giro d’Italia for women. It represented an extraordinary postcard for the Friulian territory, once again under the eyes of cycling enthusiasts from all over the world. “It was exciting to watch all the people along the way to applaud the athletes – said the regional councilor, Barbara Zilli -. The Matajur is an excellent theater for the podium of the women’s Giro d’Italia, an event that has shown how beautiful our territory is. I applaud the organizers and Enzo Cainero and thank the Friulian athletes, Elena Cecchini, Asia Zontone and Sara Casasola herself, even if she retired on Thursday. Everything we have experienced is a concrete example of the potential of Friuli Venezia Giulia, also as a driving force not only for sport, but also, if not above all for tourism ».
For his part, Enzo Cainero collects the compliments and raises. «The sporting result of the stage was extraordinary which confirms the value of the ascent of Matajur: it is a pity that at the moment it does not have the logistics that allow the men’s Giro to arrive. It is necessary to invest in the arrangement and development of the return road from the summit, which could be the old road of General Rommel, which would allow the connection with Slovenia and to complete the ring. From the tourist point of view, the area is splendid. I am definitely satisfied, more than this cannot be expected ».
Matajur is therefore close to becoming another symbol of cycling and Friulian tourism linked to sport, in the Zoncolan style. The fact that that “little” is complicated to fill is a challenge.
«The road is perfect, it allows the positioning of the cars along the slope, the length is ideal and the average gradient is suitable for any competition and could be traveled every year. Combined with Slovenia, which is the nation of the moment, it becomes an incredible resource for the Natisone Valleys and beyond: it will be necessary to reason why it must be exploited. I totally agree with Barbara Zilli on the potential of this place and the presence of all the Mayors of the Valleys means that the territory itself is involved and believes in this sector.
