César Luis Menotti, World Cup-winning coach and former Argentine soccer player, passed away on Sunday, May 5 at the age of 85. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the sad news in a press release, expressing their sorrow over the loss of the legendary coach.
Menotti, affectionately known as El Flaco, rose to prominence as a coach when he led Huracán to victory in the Metropolitan Tournament in 1973. His colorful and offensive style of play caught the attention of many, eventually earning him the opportunity to coach the Argentine National Team.
During his tenure with the Albiceleste from 1974 to 1982, Menotti achieved great success, winning the 1978 World Cup on home soil and the Under 20 World Cup a year later. He also had stints coaching top clubs in Europe such as Barcelona, Boca Juniors, Atlético de Madrid, River Plate, and Sampdoria, winning various domestic titles along the way.
In his later years, Menotti ventured into Mexican soccer, coaching teams like Puebla and Tecos. He returned to Argentina in 2019 to take on the role of Director of National Teams until his passing.
Menotti will be remembered as a pioneering coach and a true legend of Argentine soccer. His contributions to the sport will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and coaches.
