The 26-year-old basketball player and his teammates lost 97 to 106 against top team Tenerife in group K. Karsiyaka defended himself bravely and forced overtime with an 89-89 score after regular playing time. Tenerife turned out to be a size too big.

Akyazili did not appear enough in the piece to receive a rating. He was only on the basketball floor for about 25 seconds. He did manage a rebound in that one. His American teammate Vernon Carey was the top scorer of the match with 27 points.

In group L, Belgian Lion Hans Vanwijn also lost on the first matchday with his Israeli club Hapoel Holon. The Spanish Murcia proved too strong with 78-61. Vanwijn played more than 21 minutes and was good for nine points and two rebounds. His American teammate Justin Smith was the top scorer in the match with 18 points.
