The Chinese women’s wheelchair basketball team has secured their spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympics after winning the 2024 Asian Region Wheelchair Basketball Championship. The team dominated the five-a-side game, winning all six matches and clinching the championship title.
The championship, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, from the 12th to the 20th, saw a total of 11 men’s teams and 9 women’s teams from 14 countries and regions competing. The top teams in the men’s and women’s five-a-side competitions secured direct qualification for the Paris Paralympic Games.
Divided into two groups (A and B), the Chinese men’s and women’s teams were placed in Group A. While the men’s competition implemented a single round-robin within the group, the women’s competition involved a double round-robin in Group A and a single round-robin in Group B, with the first-place team in Group B moving to Group A.
In the women’s five-a-side final on the 20th, the Chinese women’s team defeated the Japanese team with a score of 54:35, emerging victorious in all 6 games and securing their spot in the Paris Paralympics. The men’s team also put up a strong performance, defeating the host team Thailand with a score of 86:74 and finishing in fifth place.
In a bid to promote the three-person wheelchair basketball project, a three-person competition was also held at the early stages of the championship. The Chinese team participated in both the three-a-side and five-a-side competitions, with the women’s team winning all 6 games and clinching the championship title, while the men’s team won 4 games and finished in third place.
In a simultaneous event with the competition, Xue Liang, recommended by the Chinese Paralympic Committee, participated in the election of the new Vice Chairman of the Asian Region Executive Committee (Head of East Asia Region) at the Asian Region Member Conference of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, successfully securing the position.
