It is not just any sedan from the 1950s, it is the personal car of former US President Harry S. Truman, who used it on a long undercover journey across the country he had just finished driving.

The car of Harry S. Truman, 33rd president of the United States, is up for sale. Between 1945 and 1953 Truman led his country through the final stages of World War II and during the early years of the Cold War. The car, a Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe, personally owned by the former president, was purchased shortly after he left office. Several photos show Truman driving the New Yorker, even during special occasions, such as his daughter’s wedding. But there is more. As documented by a famous image, the Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe is supposed to be the same car Truman used five months after his second term on a road trip expired. on the road undertaken with his wife: from Independence, Missouri, to the east coast. A journey that, according to the chronicles, lasted nineteen days. It was supposed to be some sort of romantic getaway in anonymity to visit friends and sights without any protection from the Secret Service or attention from the media. But due to the great popularity of the former president and the word of mouth sparked by the people who had met him along his journey, and perhaps by some of his staff, things went a little differently. Truman was put up for sale by Classic Auto Mallthe Pennsylvania show specializing in vintage cars, at a price of 83,425 dollars which corresponds, at current exchange rates, to approximately 79,697 euros.

Harry Truman’s personal car, completely restored, is powered by the 252hp Hemi V8 engine combined with a two-speed Powerflite automatic transmission and Rwd rear-wheel drive. A triumph of chrome plating in pure fifties style enriched by classic white tires and swing doors, without forgetting the dashboard where analog dials and buttons stand out, technological avant-garde for the time. Spectacular is the front with the cloisonné emblem, also called luster of Byzantium, set on the small “beak” that separates the two grilles, as well as the rear with the sharp and protruding headlights and the double exhaust pipe, always rigorously chromed.
