The “Joint US-China statement to improve climate action in the 1920s “is a three-page document. The two countries say they are” committed to pursuing “their efforts to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement: to be at least 2 degrees of global warming below pre-existing levels. -industrial and aiming to stay below 1.5 degrees, which is why they say they are committed to “improved climate actions to raise ambition in the 1920s”.

Cop26 Glasgow, something is moving, for the better

The two sides say they intend to collaborate on “regulatory schemes and environmental standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the 1920s”, “social benefits on the transition to clean energy”, “policies to encourage decarbonization”, “circular economy”, “carbon capture and use”. A paragraph of the agreement is dedicated to collaboration in the fight against methane emissions, the most dangerous greenhouse gas, coming mainly from leaks from extraction and distribution plants. China says it intends to implement a national emission reduction plan, and the two countries agree to meet next year to discuss the issue.

Another paragraph is dedicated to the collaboration between the two superpowers on renewable energy sources, on which they are both at the forefront. There is talk of cooperation above all on smart grids that have to manage intermittent solar and wind production and on widespread production, as well as on energy efficiency. China pledges to cease coal consumption in its 15 / o five-year plan (2026-2030), and the two countries reiterate the end of funding to coal-fired power plants overseas with unabated emissions. Cooperation is also announced on the fight against deforestation and the $ 100 billion a year fund to help LDCs decarbonise. As for COP26, China and the US are committed to working together on the Paris Rulebook (the common rules for the application of the Paris Agreement) and on Article 6 of the Agreement, which provides for a global market for carbon emissions. The two countries will announce new decarbonisation commitments (NDC) to 2035 in 2025. Finally, they will create a “Working Group for Improving Climate Action in the Twenties”, which will meet regularly.
